Why a Possum? The Story Behind PodunkAnnie's

One of the questions we hear more than any other is:

"Why a possum?"

The answer takes us back to where it all began—a small rural town in Tennessee.

When I first dreamed up this business, I knew I wanted a mascot that reflected the place that shaped me. I wanted something that captured small-town charm, country roads, front porch conversations, and the simple joy of living life a little slower.

And honestly... what's more rural than a possum?

Back then, our business was simply called Podunks, and our mascot was a little boy possum who represented our humble beginnings and our down-home spirit.

As our family grew, so did our business. When we renamed the company PodunkAnnie's after our daughter, Annabelle, it only felt right that our mascot grew with us. So our little possum got a ponytail and became the face of PodunkAnnie's.

But our possum has always meant more than a logo.

She's a reminder of where we came from. She represents hard work, family, a little Southern quirkiness, and the belief that you should never forget your roots—even as your dreams grow bigger.

That same philosophy guides everything we carry in our store.

While you'll find plenty of fun gifts and home décor, we're especially proud to partner with talented makers and small businesses from across the country. Many of the candles, handcrafted soaps, kitchen goodies, handcrafted décor, gourmet foods, seasonal favorites, and unique gifts on our shelves are created by families and artisans who, like us, started with a dream and a lot of determination.
